Rounding things out, console versions of BTD 5 made their way to PS4 and Xbox One in March of 2017, with a Nintendo Switch version not releasing until June of 2018. It’s worth noting that while NK has clearly focused most of their development efforts on BTD 6 and BTD Battles 2 by now, they haven’t completely dropped support for TD 5 Steam and Mobile, with both still occasionally receiving new maps and a still-functional weekly event rotation. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sport cross-platform co-op between Mobile and PC, but that’s understandable for a game released in 2014.

While the mobile version still stands as the most played release, the Steam version is the definitive version for PC players, being based off the mobile versions, it beats both the Flash version and Deluxe in terms of both content and graphics.

If this wasn’t BTD 5’s biggest release, then the honor would be given to… Letting Off Steamīloons TD 5’s Steam release brought a lot to the table and was meant to be the successor to Deluxe, as everyone who owned Deluxe received the Steam version for free upon its release in November 2014. Even today, it sits at the #9 spot on the App Store, and has over a million installs on Google Play. The mobile versions were huge contributors to the success of TD 5, being a lot of people’s introduction to both the game and the series as a whole, myself included.

In November of 2012, Bloons TD 5 iOS was released, with an iPad optimized version, Bloons TD 5 HD, coming a couple of weeks later in December, with an Android version of the game coming two weeks after that. While this was an important release, it’s gone largely forgotten, being overshadowed by… Popping PortablyĪs quickly as a proper desktop version was released in Deluxe, a version for mobile devices was on its way. Sporting a $20 price tag, it featured two new towers, 10 new tracks, and no in-app purchases, with every premium being able to be purchased with Monkey Money instead. With any successful project will naturally come more ways to make money from it, and the first of these was Bloons TD 5 Deluxe, announced in May of 2012 and releasing August of that same year. Up until now, I’ve only been talking about the Flash version of BTD 5, and there’s a whole wealth of re-releases to cover. As with most NK games, BTD 5 received plenty of content updates throughout its life, adding new tracks, new features, as well as events like Double Monkey Money and free specialty buildings, and while it received updates all the way until 2018, that’s far from where our story ends. It was the perfect definition of the next evolution of Bloons TD titles, better graphics, more content, innovating without being too unfamiliar, you name it. Two weeks later, BTD 5 was released to the world, to solid reception. Enter the beginning of December, Ninja Kiwi, who’d been hard at work developing the hotly anticipated next entry in their released a small teaser site, housing a trailer and a whole host of screenshots, plus a “notebook” written by a scientist showcasing some new upgrades for some of the returning towers. It’s the year 2011, and frequent visitors of Ninja Kiwi have had their hands on Bloods Tower Defense 4 Expansion, which had been released out of rising demand for a new Bloons TD title, for a decent amount of time. But we won’t be talking about either of those games today, today we’re turning back the clock about 10 years to the game that came before them both, the ever-influential Bloons TD 5. Monkeys using all manner of weaponry at their disposal to prevent evil balloons from stealing their bananas, simple idea, but enough to hold up all the way until even now, with Bloons TD 6 and the newly-released Bloons TD Battles 2 both getting pretty regular updates. I think it’s fair to say that everyone has at least seen if not played a Bloons Tower Defense game at some point in their life.
